Lighting may not be the first thing you notice when you walk into a house, but it certainly affects the way you see everything in the house. Good lighting creates a mood, helps you accomplish tasks, and makes your home uniquely yours.
So when you’re designing the lighting in your home, especially if you’re getting it ready for an open house, you need to consider several things to make sure the lighting is doing what it’s supposed to. Here are 3 tips to think about when you’re redoing your home’s lighting:
1. Choose a theme.
Lighting is a major part of your home’s interior design, so you need to choose what your design theme is first. Are you going for a sleek mod look? A chic vintage? Elegant farmhouse? Whatever your design choice, make sure your fixtures and the type of light fit the overall theme.
Also, be aware of the color of the light you choose. White light can make a space look clean and fresh, but it can also seem cold and harsh. Yellow light may be warm and homey, but it may be too warm and homey for the rest of your design.
2. Match the purpose.
The purpose of light in a given space also has a bearing on what kind of light you choose for that space. If the primary purpose is to create atmosphere, you may choose softer lighting than you would for light in a kitchen, where you need to see clearly to accomplish tasks. You can also use accent lighting to draw attention to a certain feature or item in your house.
3. Remember natural light.
Natural light is one of the best kinds of light for your home. Not only is it the best for your eyes, it makes spaces look cheery and clean as well as warm and homey. When you’re thinking about the lighting in your home, make sure you give plenty of room for natural light. Don’t crowd windows with light fixtures. Let the natural light do its work independently and use additional lighting to aid it.
I hope these 3 tips help you make the most of the light in your home. Lighting really is everything!
